In the year 270, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius II, Rome was at war, and he banned the tradition of a lottery, where when the names of a young man and woman were drawn, and if those two fell in love, and remained in love for a year, they would get married. Claudius II was afraid that young men who were in love wouldn't want to go to war, so to not only did he ban this tradition, he also banned all marriages and engagements. Imagine how those people must have felt, young lovers unable to wed?
But there was someone who hated Claudius II and his meaningless and bloody campaigns. His name was Valentine. Valentine was was a priest in Rome at the time, and he hated how Claudius II had banned something God had deemed holy and sacred. So, with the help of his friend Marius, they secretly married couples. For a short time all was well, until somehow Claudius II found out. To punish the kindly priest, he ordered that Valentine was dragged out before the Prefect Of Rome, and beaten to death with clubs, and to have his head cut off.
The day of the priest Valentine's martyrdom, according to modern calenders, is February 14th, around the year 270.
So, think about this when eating your chocolates, watching your sappy romance movies, and sharing kisses with your special someone: Almost 2,000 years ago, a kindly priest died, just so people could get married. That might change your outlook on this day just a little bit.

Silver and Bronze: TCOTS Chapter one
It was her first year at Hogwarts School for witchcraft and wizardry. Susan Henkel sat eagerly on a bench waiting for her sister, Rosemary to return with the first year chemistry set she would need as a student at Hogwarts. "Did someone order a first year chemistry set?" Susan yelled and jumped with joy as she sprinted towards the next shop to obtain a crucial thing needed to perform magic.
A wand.
Susan eagerly followed her sister and even had to be held by her hand to avoid a mishap where she would be lost. But containing her would prove more difficult that can be done once they neared the shoppe where she would purchase her main tool

Silver and Bronze: TCOTS Chapter two
Susan awoke the same evening in a manner of disposition. She was on a very worried Rosemary's lap. "Are you all right?" she asked. Susan blinked her eyes. She was shivering. "Fuck! It's so c-cold..." A darker skinned boy opened the door for a man who was grey-faced. "Did they come in here?" he asked. Rosemary looked at him and tugged at Susan's jumper. "They got my little sister." she said. The man sighed. "Better give her this, then." He handed Rosemary a log of chocolate. Susan sat up and shook her head. "I don't much care for chocolate. 'Specially not from strangers." The man laughed. "But I'm no stranger," he stated. "Allow me to introdu

Silver and Bronze: TCOTS Chapter three
Susan looked up at the roof of the Great Hall. She felt almost like an ant in a house. She once again buried her face in Cassandra's chest. She was NOT used to being in huge buildings. Dumbledore was speaking, but Susan was paying no attention. She was far too overcome by what was going on at the moment.
An elderly woman with brown hair wearing dark green robes and a matching hat was standing at the front of the Great Hall. Professor Minerva Mcgonagall was her name. She had a long list of first year students to be sorted. "Attention all first years! When you hear your name being called, come sit on the chair to be sorted by way of this hat

To go with the Valentine thing, I believe the Roman's ripped Valentine's heart out and staked it on a pike for all to see as a mockery. Not a 100% sure on this but considering what he did and the time period, I wouldn't doubt it. And that is why the heart is the symbol of Valentine's Day. Or so I was told.
And there are a bunch of different legends. This is the one that showed up the most.
I've heard what you heard.(0_o) There are some other crazy legends about some other holidays to. Halloween? Yeah. Very interesting on those historical roots. Far cry from what it is today.
Indeed. I love reading about how our holiday's originated.
Also, since you commented, would you like a feature?
